January’s Hymn of the Month: “It Is Well” SUNDAY SCHOOL For the last year and a half, I have included in the newsletter the outline and information for the FOLLOWING Sunday’s. Beginning this week, the outline and information will cover the PRECEEDING Sunday, allowing families to REVIEW the lesson each week. Unit Title: God the Redeemer Key Passage: Hebrews 3:5-6 Session Title: The Ten Commandments: Love God Bible Passage: Exodus 19:1-20:11; 31:18 Main Point: God gave the 10 Commandments to show He is holy and we are sinners. The first four commands show us how to love God. Big Picture Question: What is God’s plan? God’s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. This week, we will examine the first four of the Ten Commandments. These commands were given by God through Moses to teach His people how to love and worship Him. God demands perfect obedience, something none of us can do. And that’s the point of the law: to show us of our need for another way to be right with God, a way found only in Jesus. Help your kids understand that God is holy and expects us to be holy as well. We can be holy because of Jesus. FAMILY STARTING POINTS ● Babies and Toddlers ○ God takes care of us. ○ God made everything, and he is in charge. ○ God gives us rules to show us what He is like. ○ People do not always obey God’s rules. ○ Jesus always obeys God’s rules. ● Preschool ○ What is God’s plan? God’s plan is to rescue His people. ○ God gave us rules to show that He is holy. ● Kids ○ What is God’s plan? God’s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. ○ God gave us rules to show that He is holy and we are sinners. NEXT WEEK ● “The Ten Commandments: Love Others” (Exodus 20:1217) Check out the Gospel Project for Kids Family App or the Big Picture Cards for Families for more ways to interact with the Bible content each week. January 19th: Children’s Team Planning Meeting, 7pm Please make plans to attend our Children’s Team Planning Meeting. We will be planning out the rest of the spring and summer activities. SUNDAY SCHOOL Unit Title: God the Redeemer Key Passage: Hebrews 3:5-6 Session Title: The Golden Calf Bible Passage: Exodus 32:1-35; 34:1-9 Main Point: God punished His people for worshiping a golden calf. Big Picture Question: What is God’s plan? God’s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. God led His peole into the wilderness, but He did not leave them there alone. The Lord was with His people and provided for them. His presence could not be ignored. But when Moses went up o nthe mountain and did not return for several weeks, the Israelites felt abandoned. They appealed to Moses’ brother, Aaron to “make us a god who will go before us because this Moses…we don’t know what happened to him!” Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshipped it. God punished His people for worshiping a golden calf, and Moses returned to the mountain to ask the Lord to forgive the Israelites’ sin. Moses could not atone for the Israelites sin, but the Lord did not abandon the Israelites. Jesus is greater than Moses! When we sin, Jesus not only talks to the Father for us, He atones for our sin. God forgives those who trust in Jesus! In Christ, Stephenie ![]() What’s coming up? Mark your calendars! January 10th: Children in Action/Mission Friends RESUMES January 13th: Kids’ Choir RESUMES January 19th: Children’s Team Planning Meeting, 7pm I hope you all have had a wonderful time celebrating the birth of our Savior this Christmas season! As most of you know, Maggie arrived on December 7th, and this last weekend, our family moved to a new house! So…we have had quite an eventful Christmas season in the Stokes family. I am so excited to get back to our routine with children’s ministry at Oak Crest! All of our regular activities resume next week…PLEASE JOIN US! SUNDAY SCHOOL Unit Title: God the Redeemer Key Passage: Hebrews 3:5-6 Session Title: The Wilderness Test Bible Passage: Exodus 15:22-17:7 Main Point: God provided for the physical needs of His people. Big Picture Question: What is God’s plan? God’s plan is to rescue His people from captivity. The Israelites’ future looked incredibly bright. The Lord, through Moses, had rescued them from slavery in Egypt. He fought for them, displaying His power by parting the Red Sea and subsequently destroying Egypt’s army. God was working out His plan to bring the Israelites to the promised land-the land God promised to Abraham’s family. But the journey from Egypt to Canaan was not direct. The Lord led His people into the wilderness. The Israelites’ bright future seemed to fade… The Israelites traveled three days into the wilderness and were unable to find water…God provided. Then the Israelites moved farther into the wilderness. They hungered…God provided. The Lord is our Provider. Like He provided for the physical needs of His people in the wilderness, He provided for our spiritual needs by sending His Son, Jesus—the Bread of Life—so we can live forever. In Christ, Stephenie |
