EXPLORE THE BIBLE FOR KIDS, Sundays @ 10:30am
This week we began a study of the Book of Acts. Acts records the history of the early church. In Sunday’s Bible story, boys and girls heard about how God empowered His people with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enabled the people to share the gospel message with many, and about 3,000 people believed in Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Kids learned that the Holy Spirit is also helping them share the gospel with others. As a family, take time to think about family members, friends, or neighbors that need to hear the message of Jesus. How can your family reach out and build relationships with some of the people named? Don’t forget to check out the questions and the family Bible skill on this week’s Family Card.

Bible Passage: Acts 1:4-8; 2:1-42
Memory Verse: Acts 2:36b
Younger Kids Text Truth: The Holy Spirit helps us tell others about Jesus.
Older Kids Text Truth: The Holy Spirit empowers us to share the gospel with everyone.
God Sent the Holy Spirit
(Acts 1:4-8; 2:1-42)
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, He spent some time with His followers on earth. Jesus told His followers to stay in Jerusalem until God fulfilled His promise. Jesus said, “You will be given power when the Holy Spirit—the Special Helper—comes. You will tell everyone about Me in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Jesus returned to heaven and the disciples obeyed His instructions to stay in Jerusalem. They were waiting for the special helper—the Holy Spirit—to come just as Jesus had promised.

The disciples were gathered together when suddenly they heard a sound like a rushing wind. The sound filled the house they were staying in. Suddenly, Jesus’ followers knew the special helper had come to help them. The Holy Spirit helped the people to speak different languages.

Jesus’ followers went outside. A crowd of people from many different nations had come to Jerusalem. Jesus’ followers began to tell the people about Jesus. Suddenly, the people could hear someone talking to them in their own language. They were shocked and surprised. “Why can we hear someone speaking our language?” they all wondered.

Peter stood up and began to teach the people about Jesus. Peter explained that God had told them about Jesus through the Scriptures. Jesus had performed miracles, wonders, and signs. The people had killed Jesus on a cross, but God had raised Him from the dead.
Peter said, “We saw all of these things that happened. Now Jesus is with God. Jesus is Lord and Messiah!”

Many people in the crowd realized that they were sorry for their sins. They asked Peter, “What should we do?”

Peter replied, “Repent. You will be forgiven.” That day about 3,000 people repented of their sins and trusted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

THE GOSPEL PROJECT FOR KIDS, Sunday Evenings @ 6pm in the Fellowship Hall

Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection are the center of the gospel. Jesus accomplished the plan God had been working out throughout the Old Testament to bring salvation to sinners, and it happened in such an unlikely way. In the Book of Acts, Peter testified to the Israelites about Jesus’ death: “Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail Him to a cross and kill Him” (Acts 2:23). Crucifixion was a horrific way to die. As you share with your kids, rather than focus on the graphic details of how Jesus died, emphasize why He died. Two primary reasons stand out: God is loving, and God is just. First, God is loving. He sent His Son to be the Savior of the world because He loves us. (See John 3:16; Rom. 5:8; 1 John 4:10.) Jesus submitted to the Father’s will; He humbled Himself and came to earth as a man, and He laid down His life because He loves us. (Eph. 5:2) Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live and died the guilty death we don’t want to die. Those who trust in Him receive forgiveness and eternal life. Second, God is just. God’s law for the people was plain. (See Deuteronomy 6:5.) But God’s people, and all people, broke the law. We have loved other things more than we love God. That is sin. So why did Jesus have to die? Why couldn’t He just say, “You are forgiven”? Because God is just, He requires due payment for sin. To simply forgive sin without requiring a payment would be unjust. Jesus was our substitute, taking our place on the cross and absorbing God’s wrath on our behalf so we can be forgiven and declared righteous. (See Rom. 3:25-26; Col. 2:13-15.) Jesus died to release sinners from slavery to sin, and when we trust in Him, we are free indeed. We deserve to die because of our sin, but God loves us and kept His promise to send a Savior. Jesus never sinned, but He died in our place. He was the blood sacrifice made once and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, and those who trust in Him have forgiveness and eternal life.
