We are living in a time where media and news say that there is not hope for humanity. Yes, we are living in times where fear is among us, but the reality is that we have hope indeed! We have words from our Living God that give us peace and strength, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” (Isaiah 43:2).
These words were the inspiration to William Williams to write the hymn “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.” Williams was the son of a wealthy farmer and his plan was to become a medical doctor until he heard the preaching of Howell Harris, a Wales preacher. Williams’ life changed, and he became a preacher as well, traveling around Wales for forty-three years, covering over 95,000 miles, drawing crowds of 10,000 or more. But he is best remembered for this particular hymn.
During this time, please read this hymn, sing it if you can, or use it as a prayer. It will bring comfort to your soul.
1 Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more,
Feed me till I want no more.
2 Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield,
Be Thou still my strength and shield.
3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside.
Bear me through the swelling current,
Land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to Thee,
I will ever sing to Thee.
In His service,
Israel
