“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3 – ESV).
The name of the hymn we will learn about today is “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” It is an old hymn that is no longer in our modern hymnals, but it is always good to read its lyrics. The author was a lady named Cecil Alexander and her husband was a parish minister in Londonderry. She loved to visit poor families in rural areas and teach the children Bible lessons, the catechism, and the Apostles’ Creed. She wrote several hymns for children, to teach them sound doctrine, and when the collection of her songs was published she donated the profits to support disabled children in her area.
Cecil used the first phrase of the Apostles’ Creed as inspiration for this lovely hymn. The phrase says, “I believe in God the Father, maker of heaven and earth.” Normally, when we think about God’s creation, we focus on the big elements of the creation like galaxies, suns, moons and big seas, but Cecil encourages us to also see the small elements of the creation like flowers, little birds and fruits.
If you can, teach this sweet song to your children and grandchildren- it will be a blessing.
